Chongming is the second or third biggest island in China, depending on your personal preferences or political view on Taiwan as a part of China. Its larger sibling in the south, Hainan, has long been famous for tropical weather, as being the number one travel destination for Chinese (and other nationalities) and for its many golf courses.

But since recently even Shanghai residents can experience a bit of "Island golf". In 2013 LanHai International Golf Resort opened two 18-hole golf courses at the southwestern part of the island, where the Yangtze River meets East China Sea.

Father and son, The Golden Bear Jack Nicklaus and his son Jack Nicklaus, Jr., is the renowned design duo behind the 36 holes at this golf resort.

Chongming Island advertises itself with building Chinas first Eco City. However that has been in the planning stage since 2005 so the island's untouched natural wetlands, bird population and, if you go there in spring and summer, lush vegetation and flowers, can relax for a bit longer. It used to be quite a journey to get there by both bus and boat. But since the end of 2009, the 25,5 km long Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge-complex will take you to the island from Pudong in a much more convenient fashion. At least as long as you have a car.

The two golf courses at Chongming Island are of different character. The Links Course aims to be a classic links on the banks of Yangtze River with inspiration from Scotland and the sand belts of Australia. It's complemented by the forest course, Woodlands, which is a parkland course with lush forests and challenging topography. Despite its name, the golf holes are still surrounded by numerous lakes that will add to the experience and to your score.
